Contour Study
Hawthorns in snow
Along the ‘horse road’ in Powburn, Northumberland UK today, the hawthorns created bold, striking architectural shapes against the white back board of snow-covered fields – and ideal opportunity for a contour study…
A study of shape, structure and negative space.
Contour Study 1
Exposure: 1/640 sec at f/5.6 (hand held shot; fast shutter speed, as it was a windy day and I wanted to ‘freeze’ any movement of the tree branches and grass; reasonably large aperture to create some separation of subject from background – the subject (tree) was about 2 m away giving a Depth of Field of just over 1 m)
Exposure Bias: 2/3 EV (to keep the snow from looking grey)
ISO Speed Rating: ISO 200
Focal Length: 29 mm (46 mm equivalent with x1.6 crop factor)
Contour Study 2
Exposure: 1/500 sec at f/5.6 (hand held shot; aperture size creates some separation of subject from background)
Exposure Bias: 2/3 EV (keeps the snow from looking grey)
ISO Speed Rating: ISO 200
Focal Length: 35 mm (56 mm equivalent with x1.6 crop factor)
Contour Study 3
Exposure: 1/640 sec at f/5.6 (hand held; aperture size creates some separation of subject from background)
Exposure Bias: 2/3 EV (keeps the snow from looking grey)
ISO Speed Rating: ISO 200
Focal Length: 19 mm (30 mm equivalent with x1.6 crop factor)
